Glazed tiles have a glass-like top layer that is very hard but brittle. This layer makes drill bits slide around, which causes scratches or cracks across the Project surface.
Using masking tape creates friction so the bit stays in one place. Once the bit passes the glaze and reaches the softer clay body inside, the risk of cracking drops significantly.
Heat is the main enemy of drill bits. If the bit becomes too hot, the carbide tip will fail, so the Lead must keep the speed steady and avoid pushing too hard.
